To the editor:
The Yaquina Bay Economic Foundation, founded in 1982, is non-profit member-based collaborative organization which fosters and encourages economic development within the Yaquina Bay region. The foundation was instrumental in the creation of the Oregon Coast Aquarium as well as the Oregon Coast Community College.
The membership strongly supports the city of Newport’s Ballot Measure 21-244, and we encourage Newport residents to vote for this impactful bond measure.
Measure 21-244 would authorize a replacement bond (keyword here: no new taxes) that would generate $38 million for much-needed citywide improvements to protect public safety, improve critical services and extend the life of Newport’s public assets.
These funds would be utilized to realize multiple impactful projects that will increase water system resiliency, enhance wastewater infrastructure, improve city transportation and pedestrian safety and improve Newport’s city parks. These projects were identified by city staff and the city council, along with strong community input. This 20-year bond will replace an existing and expiring bond, meaning no new taxes for Newport city residents.
Newport is an essential economic engine for all of Lincoln County, and these improvements will not only enhance the quality of life for Newport residents, but lower future maintenance costs on critical infrastructure (which is often stressed during the peak visitor season).
The Yaquina Bay Economic Foundation cares deeply about the economic vitality of the entire Yaquina Bay region. Please join us in supporting Ballot Measure 21-244.
