The Oregon Coast STEM Hub is looking for organizations to host a Little Free Library.
The Hub is based at the Newport Hatfield Marine Center and is seeking local groups that want to help make free books available to children.
“Studies have shown that books in the hands of children have a meaningful impact on improving literacy,” according to a STEM Hub release. “But two out of three children living in poverty have no books to call their own.”
The Oregon Coast STEM Hub is working with the Mid-Coast STEM-CTE Hub, Linn Benton Community College family education resource center, and the Linn Benton Lincoln Early Learning Hub to build and distribute Little Free Libraries to underserved neighborhoods in Lincoln County. But currently, just one of the seven little libraries is spoken for, to be placed at the Seashore Joy Garden in Waldport.
Eddyville School wood shop students are putting the library boxes together, and if an organization agrees to host a box, the STEM Hub will deliver the finished box, post, and books to initially stock the box.
Interested groups may contact Oregon Coast STEM Hub director Kama Almasi at 541-867-0238.
Thank you for this information. I know several people/groups who would be a natural fit for this. Myself included.
