A 77-year-old Waldport woman died Thursday of injuries she suffered when her van collided head-on with another vehicle on U.S. Highway 20 in Newport one mile east of U.S. Highway 101.
Oregon State Police said Rosalea Ann Engelbrecht of Waldport died at Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital from injuries in the 1:16 p.m. collision.
Police said Engelbrecht was driving west in her van when for an unknown reason she began to veer into the eastbound lane. John S. Daigle, 82, of Newport was driving east, tried to avoid the van but eventually was hit head-on. Daigle and his passenger, Vicki R. Bock, 77, of Newport, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, police said.
The highway was closed for approximately three hours during the investigation.
