YACHATS — As America pauses this weekend to honor U.S. military members who died in service to their country, several Yachats traditions will help celebrate the unofficial start of the summer season.
The Memorial Day weekend features an art show and bazaar/bake sale on both Saturday and Sunday, and an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast Sunday morning. Plus, the Yachats Farmers Market, which launched May 11, will be in full swing on Sunday.
Admission is free to the Yachats Arts Guild’s “Art in the Merry Month of May” show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the Yachats Commons.
The two-day show features 11 artists displaying and selling their work. There will also be a Memorial Day presentation of “letters to home” from an active-duty soldier during wartime.
The art work includes paintings in acrylics, watercolors and oils, intarsia woodwork, stained glass, photography, mixed media and jewelry. Prices range from a few dollars for note cards and prints to hundreds of dollars for original pieces of fine art. Participating artists are Kara Wilde, Donna Bader, Phillip Schuster, Ricki Peterson, Sue Andrews, Lucinda Cross, Chuck Franklin, Jana Boutwell, Darryl Baird, Carol Summers and Janette Square.
In addition to the show, the public is invited to a reception from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Commons with live music, appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages.
The Yachats Ladies Club Memorial Day Bazaar and Bake Sale is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the group’s clubhouse, 286 W. Third St., where shoppers will find a broad selection of handcrafted items, from quilts and throws to aprons, pet items and homemade soaps, plus baked goods and mini-pies,
Proceeds from this and the club’s other bazaars throughout the year benefit non-profits in the area, including Yachats Youth and Family Activities Program, food banks in Waldport and Yachats, and the Friends of Lincoln County Animal Shelter.
Visitors can also buy $1 quilt raffle tickets for the club’s scholarship fund for Oregon Coast Community College. The winner does not need to be present when the raffle drawing takes place in December at the club’s Christmas Bazaar.

The Yachats Lions Club’s annual Memorial Day weekend breakfast is 7:30-11 a.m. Sunday at the Lions Hall, 344 W. Fourth St. Suggested donation is $10.
A fundraising club tradition for more than 20 years, the popular event offers all-you-can-eat pancakes, eggs, sausage and ham, plus juice, coffee, tea and milk.
“Angell Job Corps always provides students to help us serve, along with our club volunteers,” said breakfast coordinator/club president David OKelley. “It’s really a gathering for fellowship and supporting a great cause.”
Proceeds help benefit college scholarships for graduating seniors at Waldport High School — two of them at $2,500 each — and other donations to local organizations.
It’s the third week of the Yachats Farmers Market which operates from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday along West Fourth Street at U.S. Highway 101. The open-air market operates each Sunday through mid-October. Farmers are joined by potters, jewelry-makers and more handcrafters. Shoppers will find organic vegetables, herbs, jams, plants, breads, jewelry, honey and clothing. Well-behaved dogs are allowed.
