Yes, there was a lot — a record amount — of rain in November

They say records are made to be broken. That certainly applies to rain on the central Oregon coast in November.

All of the YachatsNews weather watchers recorded prodigious amount of rain in November – just in time for a long dry spell this month.

Don Tucker, who lives two miles north of Yachats and has been recording weather data for 17 years, measured 16.74 inches of rain in November, eclipsing his former record of 13.29 inches in November 2017. His total for the 11 months of 2024 stands at 84.04 inches – not quite as high as his 11-month total of 89.48 inches in 2017.

The staff at the Yachats wastewater treatment plant measured 16.10 inches of rain in November, for an 11-month total of 72.14 inches. “This was the wettest November since 2012 at the wastewater treatment plant,” said supervisor Dave Buckwald.

Adam Altson, who lives a block west of the treatment plant, measured 13.36 inches of rain in November and now has 69.88 inches for the year. “In the last seven years, only 2021 had more year-to-date rain, with 71.85 inches that year,” he said.

Julie Bailey, who lives on Horizon Hill, recorded 18.73 inches of rain in November for an 11-month total of 84.09 inches – nearly 26 inches more than the same period last year.

Two weather watchers who live in the Yachats River valley recorded big rainfall totals.

Jim Adler, who lives three miles east of Yachats, had 17.31 inches of rain in November – five inches higher than his November average. “I’ve had only one wetter November in 16 years and that was 21.76 inches in 2016,” Adler said. “My year-to-date total of 99.02 inches is already higher than 12 of my 16 total years.”

Bob Williams, who lives eight miles up the valley, measured 22.47 inches of rain in November for a total so far this year of 116.80 inches.

Other weather notes:

  • Tucker recorded rain on 24 of November’s 30 days.
  • Altson’s highest recorded temperature in November was 62.4 (his lowest ever for the month), his lowest temperature was 35.3, and the average was 49.31. “Nov. 29 was the second coldest November day – only 44.5 degrees — I’ve ever measured.”
  • Bailey measured 2.54 inches of rain on Nov. 13 and 2.47 inches on Nov. 19. Her highest temperature for the month was 63.2 degrees on Nov. 7 and the lowest temperature was 34.3 on Nov. 30.
