YACHATS — View the Future and Yachatians for Social Justice are hosting an award winning documentary “What We Lost Along the Way” and a conversation with its filmmaker at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 26 in the Yachats Commons.
The documentary is a record of Devin Boss and two friends – all Black men — experiencing their first visits the coast in Yachats, Newport, and Florence. The short film follows the trio as they explore themes of friendship, identity, and belonging in the outdoors.
“Through striking coastal imagery and candid conversations, the film captures the emotional and cultural connections people form with nature while examining who feels welcome in outdoor spaces,” said a release from View the Future.
Boss is the founder of the Portland-based production company North East Productions. Following the showing, Boss will talk about the inspiration behind the film, the filmmaking process, and how storytelling can help broaden perspectives about who belongs in the outdoors.
The program is part of View the Future’s ongoing events exploring the cultural, environmental and community connections that shape the coast. View the Future is a nonprofit land trust dedicated to protecting the land, culture, and natural beauty of the Yachats area and deepen public understanding of the region’s natural and cultural significance.
Yachatians for Social Justice is a community organization committed to advancing equity, inclusion, and social justice in the Yachats area through education, dialogue, and civic engagement.

Do watch this 15 minute documentary! As local folks we know what a treasure this part of the world is. I hope and pray more people can enjoy the “reset” these men experienced—as we do every day. Blessed. https://youtu.be/IBdPaYDofpY?feature=shared
