Yachats council accepts Kerti’s resignation, outlines timeline for filling vacancy

Quinton Smith The Yachats City Council spent three hours Wednesday afternoon listening to citizen concerns, hearing about water rates and determining how to fill a vacancy on the five-member council.

Want to spend at least six to eight hours a month in daytime meetings under the scrutiny of 25 people?

Looking to be harangued with complaints about vacation rentals, code enforcement, signs, lights, traffic, budgets and other issues that consume a small, coastal community?

Then the Yachats City Council has a position for you.

But a sudden opening on the council is also the chance to help determine the direction and spirit of a city built on community involvement while trying to balance the desires of working residents, retirees and tourists.

The council on Wednesday accepted the resignation of Councilor James Kerti, 33, who quit in frustration last week just one year into his four-year term.

After a bit of back-and-for over how quickly to appoint a replacement, the council decided to advertise the opening as soon as possible and seek applications until 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14. The city posted the application form on its website Saturday.

At its Feb. 19 meeting the council will decide if there are enough applicants and, if so, schedule a special public meeting to interview applicants. It could then vote on a replacement at one of its March meetings.

The council went through a proposed cover letter soliciting applications that was used last year by the city of Florence and then cribbed questions to applicants from forms used in Medford and Ashland.

Potential council members have to be a registered voter and a resident of Yachats for 12 months prior to taking office. The person selected would fill the remainder of Kerti’s four-year term, which expires in December 2022.

The city will publicize on its website, in its monthly newsletter and at the Post Office when applications are available.
