YACHATS — Yachats’ summer season officially launches this weekend with the return of two popular attractions — the Yachats Arts Guild’s three-day art show and the Yachats Ladies Club’s two-day benefit sale of handcrafted items and baked goods.
The art show, themed “Here Comes The Sun”, runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the Yachats Commons. Some two dozen accomplished artists will be displaying and selling their creations, from watercolors to photography, silk paintings to jewelry.
“It’ll be a big show,” said show coordinator Sherry Secreast. “Along with all our artists from up and down the central coast, we’ll have special displays in stained glass and intarsia wood.” The glass (in Room 8) is the work of Chuck Franklin of Waldport, a noted practitioner who has retired from commercial installations and now takes orders for private commissions.
The intarsia wood pieces are the creations of Janette Square, one of the newer Guild members. The author of a book on intarsia woodworking, she fashions designs of nature and fantasy from individual pieces of wood.
Prices for all the works on display start at about $20 and go up to a few thousand.
“We had a two-year pandemic gap in our shows, but now the Guild is growing,” said Secreast. “We have about 40 members now. This weekend is a great opportunity to see beautiful works, from fine art to whimsical, and to support local artists.”
The show is produced by Polly Plumb Productions, a local non-profit that brings cultural events to Yachats.
Barely two blocks away at 286 W. Third St., the Yachats Ladies Club will be holding a craft bazaar from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Customers can choose from an array of handcrafted items from scarves and throws to pillows, soaps and more plus baked goods —including mini-pies.
While the club no longer offers its popular full-sized pies, the five-inch mini versions will be available in a couple of flavors. In addition, the bazaar will offer strawberry freezer jam and fresh bread, expected to sell out in the first hour.
“Most of our proceeds go to other non-profits in the area,” said club president Huck Huckins. These include Yachats Youth and Family Activities Program, food banks in Waldport and Yachats, and the Friends of Lincoln County Animal Shelter.
Visitors to the bazaar can also buy $1 quilt raffle tickets for the club’s scholarship fund for Oregon Coast Community College. The winner does not need to be present when the raffle drawing takes place in December at the club’s Christmas Bazaar.
