From grabbing a few pieces of litter to drop into a public waste bin after a solo beach walk to participating in the large SOLVE cleanups held every year, many Oregonians help keep the coast’s natural areas from being overwhelmed by trash.
On Saturday, Sept. 16, people can help celebrate International Coastal Cleanup Day by choosing from one of many cleanup events on the coast from Manzanita to Waldport. Below are a few suggested locations.
The Newport Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation is hosting four beach cleanup sites; a fifth cleanup is in Waldport.
- Yaquina Bay State Park
- Nye Beach Turnaround
- Agate Beach State Recreation Site
- Devils Punchbowl/Otter Rock State Park
- Governor Patterson State Park, Waldport
The Hatfield Marine Science Center Green Team is also hosting a cleanup site on Yaquina Bay Road.

Volunteers with the MidCoast Watershed Council will be picking up trash by foot and boat to improve the Salmon River northeast of Lincoln City for wildlife and people. There will be coffee and refreshments in the morning. Volunteers can help keep this a low-waste event by bringing reusable buckets, bags and gloves.
Advanced registration is strongly suggested but not required.
