WALDPORT – A Missouri man is being held on $1 million bond after his arrest early Wednesday on accusations of attempted second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and menacing after stabbing a woman he had come to Oregon with.
Steven B. Kelley, 64, of St. Louis is being held in the Lincoln County jail with a court appearance scheduled Thursday.
Kelley and a 50-year-old woman had been staying temporarily at a house on Southwest Brentwood Drive in Waldport since June 26 when a man living in the property’s detached garage called police about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday to report a domestic disturbance. A neighbor next door also called 9-1-1 to say that a woman “had knocked on his door speaking gibberish and said someone was going to kill her,” according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Lincoln County circuit court by Deputy Aaron Brooks.
When Brooks arrived he saw Oregon State Police Trooper Nathan Goodey in the middle of Brentwood Drive with a nude woman bleeding from the neck and throat from 3- and 2-inch wounds. An ambulance took the woman to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport.
Brooks’ affidavit said Kelley was arrested at 4:47 a.m. Wednesday but did not say where or how. The affidavit said a 10- to 12-inch hunting knife was found in Kelley’s car.
