YACHATS – Investigative journalist and co-anchor of NBC News Chicago will discuss “The Lost story of Emmett Till: The Universal Story” at the Yachats’ Commons on Monday Aug. 11.
Marion Brooks will share her work on the Emmy winning documentary she and her colleagues produced in an evening of history, reflection and truth telling. She will explore the hidden history behind one of the most pivotal events in the American civil rights movement—the murder of Till – and why telling this story now is more important than ever.
Till was an African American youth, who was 14 years old when he was abducted and lynched in Mississippi in 1955 after being accused of offending a white woman, Carolyn Bryant, in her family’s grocery store.
As the producer and author of the NBC docuseries The Lost Story of Emmett Till, Brooks will offer a behind-the-scenes look at how journalism, memory, and social justice intersect to illuminate the truth.
Brooks is the daughter of Yachats residents Margaret and Sam Brooks. The 7-9 p.m. presentation is sponsored by View the Future, the Yachats-based nonprofit. There is a suggested donation $10.
