Yachats Lions Club Labor Day Pancake Breakfast: 7:30-11:00 a.m., Lions Hall, 344 W. Fourth St. A fundraising tradition for the service group, this all-you-can-eat breakfast includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, ham, milk, orange juice and coffee. Suggested donation is $10. Club volunteers will be serving up the ample fare, aided by students from nearby Angell Job Corps. This year, proceeds will benefit the Lions Club’s support of scholarships at Waldport High School.
University of Oregon researcher and author Marli Miller will talk about how the Oregon coast between Yachats and Florence was formed millions of years ago by a series of volcanoes.

Sunday, Aug. 11 at 2:00 p.m. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Ian Black of the OSU College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences will talk about “The National Science Foundation’s New Regional Class Research Vessels – The R/V Taani” which is being built for OSU and expected to arrive in Newport in 2025 The first half of the talk will discuss the build and scientific capabilities of the research vessel, which is anticipated to start operating from OSU’s facilities next year. The second half of the talk will describe some of the larger scientific questions this vessel was designed to answer
