
YACHATS — Two moderate earthquakes occurred early Wednesday roughly 280 miles west of Yachats along the active but not-so-dangerous Blanco fracture zone.
No one on the Oregon coast felt the quakes – a 4.8 magnitude earthquake at 6:42 a.m. and 5.4 magnitude quake at 7 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
No indication of any kind of tsunami risk has been given by officials. A 5.0 magnitude earthquake is considered a “moderate” one.
Blanco fracture zone, which is among the most seismically active in North America and part of the boundary of the between the Pacific plate’s eastern edge and the Juan de Fuca plate’s western edge. The Blanco zone is much farther west of the more concerning Cascadia subduction zone and rarely leads to destructive quakes, according to earthquake experts.
