To the editor:
Do you oppose the recent layoffs of thousands of federal employees working in Oregon? Do you oppose the dismantling of the Department of Education, and threats to diminish, eliminate, or privatize Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, FEMA, and the U.S. Postal Service?
Are you baffled by all the lies?
Do you oppose indiscriminate cutting of grants that fund medical and science research, and the cancelling of aid to starving nations? Are you opposed to decimating government departments so all that money can fund tax reductions for billionaires? Do you oppose cutting food bank assistance programs for Oregon families when the price of groceries keeps going up?
Are you against the cruelty of mass deportations and the arrests of students on visas just to meet deportation goals? Are you against the erosion of judicial independence and attacks on judges who question unconstitutional actions? Do you oppose silencing dissent and free speech? Do you believe it is okay to destroy the government while pretending to look for fraud and waste?
Do you stand in opposition of the United States taking over Greenland, Canada, Panama, and re-making Gaza into the Riviera of the Middle East? Are you against the world’s richest man buying votes, but facing no consequences as he manipulates national and state elections? Do you oppose presidential immunity from criminal liability?
Do you oppose DOGE’s chainsaw attacks and its leader’s massive conflicts of interest? Are you against US withdrawal from NATO and the World Health Organization? Do you oppose increasing tariffs on our allies and playing footsie with our enemies? Are you against cutting support for Ukraine? Do you oppose deletion of all DEI references everywhere, and brown, black, and female government employees fired without cause or warning? Are you against the decimation of climate and environmental safeguards?
Are you opposed to attacks on veterans, kids, seniors, farmers, immigrants, labor unions, colleges, foreign students with green cards, the press, libraries, political opponents, and LGBTQ+ folk? Are you against Citizens United combining corporate power with government, threats to civil liberties, increased logging on federal land, and the egregious failures due to hiring amateurs to lead federal departments and protect national security?
If so, you are not alone.
A 50 state “Hands Off!”/”Remove, Reverse, Reclaim” day of grassroots action to unite us is scheduled to begin at noon Saturday, April 5, at every state Capitol and in thousands of other cities and towns around the country. The point of these nonviolent rallies is to remove corrupt politicians from office, reverse the damage already done by the president and his so-called Department of Government Efficiency, and reclaim democracy.
Stand with millions of others who will flood downtown streets all over the country at noon Saturday, April 5.
You will find me standing outside Newport city hall starting at noon Saturday, April 5 in support of the people of this country. I hope to see you there, too.
— Carla Perry/Newport
I’m with you, Carla! That’s a damn powerful letter. I admire your decision to sign it. I will not be in Newport on Saturday, but I will be protesting in Portland. This state of affairs is beyond beyond.
Additionally, I have been getting my news through Substack – The Meidas Network, Jim Acosta, and surprisingly Michael Cohen. America is paying the price. Kudos to Cory Booker, though frankly the Dems are mostly MIA. I could go on and on. Just know I stand with you. Miss you.
Thank you, Carla! And thank you for protesting in person for those of us who can’t be there. Bless you all for speaking for us and making good trouble.
Also thanks to Carla Perry who has always championed for justice, peace, equality and inclusion. We will be standing with you in person or in spirit for humanity’s goodness and decency.
Carla’s call to action must be heeded. It is the least we can do and, of course, we must do all we can.
Right on, Carla. I’ll be there to stand with you … this Saturday and many Saturdays to come.
Thanks, Carla. Not always easy to speak truth to power, but we need to do more of this. You are a great role model.
