SEAL ROCK — The public is invited to share in an open house celebration of the Seal Rock Garden Club’s 75th anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 7.
From 1-4 p.m. at the club building, 10377 NW Rand St., members will share the rich history of the club, along with gardening information and refreshments.
The community non-profit organization helps coastal gardeners share their knowledge of plants, and provides a social setting for those interested in gardening, conservation and support of community gardening projects.
At the open house, the club will trace its roots from its founding in 1948, using displays, photos of well-known residents and in-person storytellers.
The early Seal Rock Garden Club rented space in the Community Club’s building for meetings and an annual flower show. Originally a housing barracks for conscientious objectors during World War II, the clubhouse was located near the site of Angell Job Corps in Waldport.
According to a feature from Oregon Public Broadcasting published in YachatsNews earlier this year, the club was founded to meet the need for local knowledge to help grow plants along the coast.
In 1950, when the U.S. Forest Service decided to auction off the building, the club raised enough to buy it for $306. Today, the “little yellow clubhouse” sits next to the Seal Rock fire station on the east side of U.S. Highway 101.
The club meets the third Wednesday of every month; membership is $30 annually.
