NEWPORT – Have something tricky that needs fixing? Or, better yet, know how to fix a household item?
The third annual Hatfield Marine Science Center’s community “repair fair” is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1 at the center and organizers are seeking both people who know how to fix things and people needing something repaired.
Do you have a broken small appliance? Have you discovered a rip in your clothing or other fabric? Did your lamp stop working? Does your bicycle need attention Hosted by Oregon Sea Grant, the Hatfield Innovation Lab, and the Hatfield Center’s “Green Team,” the free event offers opportunities for people to get broken household items repaired at no cost, as well as gain skills to make their own repairs.
How it works: People bring broken household items to the fair and get matched with a volunteer who will attempt a repair. Most people stay with their item during its repair to learn about the process. The event will also feature skills demos and do-it-yourself repair activities and community organizations will be on hand to share sustainability resources and waste reduction strategies.
Last year, more than 30 volunteers served as fixers, presenters, or general event helpers, and nearly three quarters of the 159 items brought to the fair were fixed. To learn more about the fair, see photos from past years, or sign up to volunteer, go here.
