NEWPORT — Back after a two-year absence due to the pandemic, the Oregon Coastal Quilters Guild is staging its annual show Friday and Saturday, Aug. 5-6.
Over 300 quilts by members of the guild will be on display at the Newport Recreation Center, 225 S.E. Avery St. from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. In addition, the show will feature demonstrations, a member boutique with handcrafted items, several vendors, and a raffle.
Raffle tickets are $1 each, or six for $5. The drawing will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday with the winner receiving an 84 inch by 84 inch quilt titled “Coastal Twilight,” inspired by the colors of a Newport sunset. In addition to the main raffle, visitors will also be able to bid on an additional silent auction of small quilts.
The featured quilter at the show will be Jane Szabo of Waldport, a former president of the guild who has also served as treasurer and quilt show co-chair. Two more extra features will also be part of the show — a “Trees for Oregon” silent auction, and a presentation of quilts to Lincoln County veterans.
For the challenge, some 30 quilters created an item using the theme of trees. Half of the winning bid on each item (if it’s offered for sale) will be donated to a charity called One Tree Planted. Each dollar donated, according to show organizers, will plant a tree in Oregon. The quilted items in the challenge can be viewed, bid on or bought outright on the guild’s website.
Veterans will be honored on both days, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., with presentations of quilts by the guild’s Veterans Quilt Project. Scheduled to be recognized are Carl Stewart of Waldport, Donald Walton of Gleneden Beach, John Hubble of Logsden and Thomas “Mike” Taylor of Newport. More than 400 quilts have been awarded to veterans under the quilt project.
