Oregon Sea Grant is again offering its popular “Shop at the Dock” tours in Newport beginning this week and is offering similar tours at six other ports in Oregon and southwest Washington.
The Newport tours will be offered at 9:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday, July 11-12, Friday, July 18 and Friday, July 25 and again Aug. 1-2.
The Newport tours are free, no ticket is necessary and the tours are first come, first served. The Newport tours meet at Dock 5 at the Port of Newport on Southwest Bay Boulevard in Newport.
People with groups of five or more should call 541-648-6816 ahead of time to make arrangements. Tours may be possible at additional times, as needed, for larger groups.
During the tours, people learn where to find local seafood, what’s in season, how it’s caught, if it’s sustainable, and how to purchase high-quality seafood directly from fishermen at ports along the Oregon coast.
The tours have been expanded to Ilwaco, Wash., Warrenton, Garbaldi, Charleston, Port Orford and Brookings. While there is no ticket necessary for tours in Newport, for all other locations organizers are asking people to reserve a free ticket here.
