Police arrested the director of Oregon Coast Community College’s aquarium science program on Tuesday and charged him with nine counts of encouraging child sex abuse after an 11-month investigation by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon Department of Justice.
Larry C. Boles, 55, of Toledo was arraigned on the charges Wednesday afternoon and is being held in the county jail with bail. His next court appearance is Wednesday.
The charges involve downloading videos of child pornography and infant rape and bestiality involving children, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Lincoln County circuit court Wednesday.
Boles had submitted his resignation to the college in October and the college has been advertising for his replacement. The college issued a statement Wednesday morning that it was aware of Boles’ arrest and that he had been placed on administrative leave. He had worked at the college since 2018.
The police affidavit said the investigation began last December when Sheriff’s Detective Tony Bettencourt received a notice from a state task force that the videos were being uploaded to a computer account later traced to Boles, who was living in Seal Rock at the time. The investigation determined that the videos had been downloaded between August 2024 and June 2025, according to the affidavit.
Investigators got a search warrant for Boles’ Seal Rock house on June 18, the affidavit said, and took several electronic devices from his room to examine. The affidavit said investigators were able to initially link eight videos to Boles’ account at an online service provider. The affidavit said state investigators then found additional videos.
Police took Boles into custody Tuesday in Toledo where he had been living.
This is beyond disturbing. What’s even more troubling is that the producers behind this aren’t being prosecuted. Arresting end users is important, but if we really want to protect children, we need to focus on shutting down the people who create and distribute this in the first place.
