The Pacific Coast Wind Ensemble invites audiences to take a musical journey with it through Broadway, film, opera and literature with “Once Upon a Time: Music from Broadway to the Silver Screen.”
Performances are Saturday, Sept. 5, at Presbyterian Community Church in Florence and Monday, Sept. 7, in the Yachats Commons. Both concerts begin at 2 p.m. Admission is free, with donations suggested.
“Every selection carries a story, introduces memorable characters or transports the listener to another place and time,” said director Ernie Hills.
The program features works from American musical theater, including Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music, Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story and The Wizard of Oz. Opera selections include Georges Bizet’s Carmen and George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. The concert’s literary centerpiece is Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, inspired by One Thousand and One Nights.
“The audience will recognize many of these melodies immediately,” said ensemble music director Ernie Hills. “But hearing them played by a concert band allows listeners to discover new colors, textures and details within familiar music.”
