Organizers seek artists for annual Yachats banner project

Michael Guerriero, center, talks to Yachats artist Bruce Rawles who Wednesday picked up white canvas banners to paint and then hang along U.S. Highway 101 this summer. Claire Good and Carol Cassidy, left, help prepare paint.

Michael Guerriero is looking for some painters.

Guerriero, a Yachats artist, is organizing other artists to paint 40 banners to hang on U.S. Highway 101 light poles in downtown Yachats and elsewhere around town.

Artists must complete their work by May 29. The 23- by 42-inch banners will be displayed from mid June through September.

After they are taken down in October, Polly Plumb Productions organizes a fundraiser sale of the banners to support local arts projects and to buy paint, canvas and some labor for next year’s effort.

The banner project is in its third year. Guerriero said it makes use of the antique light poles that went up along U.S. Highway 101 in downtown Yachats and after he saw a similar banner-and-fundraiser project in the Nye Beach area of Newport.

“It looked like a lot of fun,” he said.

The Friends of the Yachats Commons got a $500 grant in 2017 to start the project. Now he organizes it for Polly Plumb Productions. The first two fundraising auctions brought in $6,000 each year, he said.

The theme this summer is “Yachats – Where edges meet.”

Guerriero said artists paint their interpretation of the theme on the front and he screen prints “Yachats” on the back. Volunteering artists — there are 25 so far — are limited to those living within 20 miles of Yachats, Guerriero said.

“It’s a good way to bring the community together to do something good,” he said. “Everyone seems to enjoy it.”

In addition to the light poles, some banners may be displayed at the Commons or other locations around town, he said.

For more information or to sign up for a banner, Guerriero can be reached by email at mguerro@peak.org, or by calling (541)-547-5024.
