The annual show from the Oregon Coastal Quilters Guild will highlight Gloria Zirges as this year’s featured quilter. Zirges is an accomplished artist, whose quilts have been exhibited in numerous shows, including the Northwest Quilting Expo in Portland; the International Quilt Show in Houston, and the Road to California Show.
Quilts by the Sea will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Newport Recreation Center, 225 S.E. Avery St. The entrance fee is $10 for adults and free for kids under 12.
The show will feature special presentations to four local military veterans each day at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., along with a display of veterans’ quilts along the hallway. The honored veterans for this year’s show are: Navy veterans David Gray and Robert (Bob) Smith on Friday; and Navy veteran Elizabeth Ann Bowen and Army veteran Manny Sandoval on Saturday.
This year’s quilts will be judged by Kathie Kerler of Portland, an accredited judge with the National Association of Certified Judges. Kerler has been judging quilts since 2002 and for seven years was a contributing editor of American Quilter magazine.
Quilts by the Sea will also feature a vendors’ mall, a children’s activity center and displays of quilters guild activities. Some of the quilts in the show will also be for sale.
Tickets for the 2025 Raffle Quilt, “Starry Night,” pieced and quilted by guild members, will be available for $1 apiece or six for $5.
A two-day silent auction of small quilts will be on offer, with half of the proceeds of the auction donated to a local charity. The 2025 “Trips and Travels” Challenge quilts will also be available to view.
