This is the last week to let a University of Oregon researcher and his journalism students know how you find out what’s going on in your community.
Andrew DeVigal, director of the Agora Journalism Center at the University of Oregon, and his winter term “Engaged Journalism” class are researching how Lincoln County residents find and use news and other information about their communities.
A survey is available online for residents to tell them where you look for local information and news, what topics need more attention, where you go to share that information and other questions. The survey is open until Sunday, Feb. 8.
Over the past six years, DeVigal and his students have spent winter term delving into the question of community engagement and the connections to local news in mostly rural communities ranging from Hermiston, to LaPine, to the Rogue Valley and last year Florence and Oakridge. The studies are designed to help understand how local residents access, trust, and share information.
There are also be printed copies of the survey at libraries and other gathering places around the county.
Then there will be two community forums – Feb. 28 in Newport and March 1 in Lincoln City – where people can come to DeVigal-led sessions to discuss local news and communication issues. There will also be a showing and panel discussion at the Pacific Heritage Maritime Center in Newport on Feb. 28 of the documentary “Stripped for Parts” about how some corporate owners are cutting or closing newspaper operations across the United States.
