NEWPORT — The Nye Neighborhood Association and the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts are inviting residents, artists and business owners to forums Friday and Saturday, May 9-10 to weigh in on creating a formal “cultural district” to reflect the neighborhood’s history, creative spirit and identity.
In its early planning phase, the proposed cultural district would build on the area’s artistic roots, historical significance, and connection to nature.
“This is an invitation,” said Wendy Engler, a member of the Nye Beach Cultural District planning group. “We’re asking the community to dream with us, and to share what they love about Nye Beach, what could be improved, and what kind of creative experiences they want to see here in the future.”
Two forums are scheduled to gather feedback, share early ideas, and spark conversations — 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 9, Room 205, Newport Visual Arts Center, and 2:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 10, in the Newport Performing Arts Center.
Community members are also encouraged to complete a brief online survey to share ideas related to creativity, culture, and community life in Nye Beach via a English survey: https://tinyurl.com/NyeBeachSurvey or a Spanish survey: https://tinyurl.com/NyeBeachSurvey-Spanish
In a news release announcing the sessions, organizers said the project also seeks to strengthen the neighborhood’s economy and small business ecosystem “through arts-driven activity via ideas like art walks, pop-up performances, festivals, gallery nights, and collaborations with local cafes and shops.”
“The vision is a welcoming, walkable neighborhood where residents and visitors alike feel a sense of belonging and inspiration,” the association said.
