YACHATS — A book sale to benefit the Yachats Library and a musical Spring Solstice observation are on tap for much of the day Sunday in the Yachats Commons and pavilion.
The Friends of the Yachats Library is bringing back its popular book sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday in the Commons’ multipurpose room. The group will be selling books, puzzles and a collection of Muffy Vanderbears, with most of the proceeds going towards the library’s planned expansion.
Although it is one day instead of two, it is the first library book sale in the multipurpose room since 2019.
“This is a big fundraiser for us,” said Sandy Dunn, the nonprofit’s president. “In our two-day sales in the past, we’ve gone over the $6,000 mark.”
Since the coronavirus pandemic, the Friends group has turned to “pop-up” sales in conjunction with the Sunday Farmers’ Markets, and expects to resume those this summer.
Book shoppers can find hardbound and paperback books in all genres, plus Easton Press Leather Bound Classics. Most hardbound books will be priced at $2 each, with lower prices on Pocket Books and paperbacks. There will also be a “special price” table featuring first editions, author-signed volumes, book sets and coffee table books.
Cash and credit cards will be accepted as payment. Whatever COVID-19 protocols the city is requiring will be observed at the sale. “We’ll probably still be requiring masks,” said Dunn.
The Friends group is a non-profit formed in 2004 to raise money to support the library’s budget. Book donations are sought year ‘round, and can be brought to the Yachats Library from 1-3 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Free music, popcorn at pavilion
As soon as the book sale ends at 3 p.m., just a few yards away in the pavilion the music will start up for Polly Plumb’s annual Spring Equinox celebration. Steve Cook and Curtis Colt will be performing musical favorites on guitar, vocals and drums.
The spring or vernal equinox is celebrated throughout the world and marks the start of spring. This year, it occurs at 8:33 a.m. Sunday when the visible sun is directly above the equator. This creates almost equal amounts of daylight and darkness at all latitudes.
