To the editor:
Having known and admired Jan Kaplan as a neighbor for many years, I wholeheartedly endorse him to continue as mayor for the city of Newport.
Jan has held the office since August 2023 and shown himself to be highly capable, engaged and caring. If you watch him during meetings, you will see he is very respectful and kind to all, able to moderate conflict, and really, truly listens to different points of view.
I spoke with him soon after he became mayor and had just spent many hours in meetings learning about different public housing options and housing organizations in Newport. He was excited to get this information as he would be able to better understand and facilitate improving housing resources for those in need. He is always researching, networking, and searching for resources to facilitate different projects and ideas. Having worked with him on neighborhood projects, his suggestions and encouragement were always appreciated. During the tumultuous time when the possibility of an ICE facility set in Newport was apparent, Jan represented the city with grace and dignity, utilizing people and resources to put a hold on that project.
Jan Kaplan has a true love of Newport with many ideas on how to make Newport even better. He has the drive and interest to keep learning how best to accomplish city goals, and the temperament and great sense of humor to rise above the animosity and conflict so currently prevalent. He is a public servant through and through and will help the people of Newport to the best of his abilities.
Please consider voting Jan Kaplan for mayor of Newport.
