NEWPORT — About 400 triathlon participants will be biking, running and swimming in Newport this Sunday with some busy city streets included in the course.
The Newport Harbor Triathlon kicks off with a 500-yard swim at the Newport Aquatic Center before a 12-mile bike ride along Yaquina Bay, finishing with a 3.1 mile run across the Yaquina Bay Bridge.
Portions of the route include U.S. Highway 101 and while participants will not directly come onto U.S. Highway 20, some streets will be just a block away from the busy highway.
The adult bike ride will begin at the Newport Recreation Center and go down Southwest Hatfield Drive, along Bay Boulevard hugging the Bayfront and Yaquina River. The youth bike route includes Southwest Ninth, Southwest Bay, Southwest 12th Street and Southwest Government streets as participants make their way from the aquatic center south to the Yaquina Bay State Park.
The adult running route includes Southwest Ninth, Bay and 12th streets and Highway 20 as participants cross the Yaquina Bay Bridge.
The youth running route includes Southeast First, Southeast Second, Southeast 10th and Southeast Coos streets as participants make their way past the Newport Recreation Center and past Goodwill and Oceana Natural Foods. Drivers coming off Highway 20 and driving south are encouraged to use caution and watch for runners.
