Musical groups from Portland and Tualatin perform Sunday at Newport church

Oregon Coast TODAY Members of the Willow String Quartet met while studying at Portland State University and now perform all over Oregon.

NEWPORT — The Willow String Quartet of Portland will present a chamber concert at Atonement Lutheran Church in Newport at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 30. Also performing on the program will be the Tualatin High School Chamber Orchestra.

The quartet will be performing the Edvard Grieg “String Quartet Op. 27 in G minor.”

Member violinists, Shion Yamakawa and Jing Kappes, violist Keely McMurry and cellist Jonah Thomas met through the string faculties at Portland State University. Together, they have played at private events, operas, nursing homes, weddings, recitals and more.

In addition to playing chamber music, individually they perform with the Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, as well as teaching private lessons in the Portland area.

The group studied with Carol Sindell, Hamilton Cheifetz, Tomas Cotik and Angelika Furtwangler. As a quartet, they have performed pieces such as Beethoven’s “String Quartet No. 4,” Schubert’s “String Quartet,” Beethoven’s “Viola Quintet” and Brahms’ “Viola Quintet” and are currently expanding their repertoire.

Opening the program will be The Timberwolves Chamber Orchestra, an audition-only string orchestra made up of 26 students from Tualatin High School. The group has won many awards throughout the years, including a league championship and top 10 finish at an Oregon annual competition.

Each year, the ensemble performs at many concerts including a holiday pops concert in December, a spring concert in March and a pops concert in June. They are under the direction of  Reggie Stegmeier, who is in his 10th year as the director of bands and orchestras at Tualatin. Prior to that, he spent 10 years as the director of the Canby Community (Symphony) Orchestra. The orchestra will perform the “Allegro Giocoso” by Michael Senturia, William Hofeldt’s “Palmetto Suite,” Two South American tangos by A.G. Villoldo and Alan Lee Silva’s “Waterloo Station.”

This presentation is part of the Oregon Coast Youth Symphony Festival and is free with donations accepted.

Atonement Lutheran Church is located at 2315 N. Hwy. 101, Newport.
