Local jobless rate stays at 5.8 percent in August — still higher than Oregon, national averages

Lincoln County’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.8 percent in August, unchanged from July but down from 6.3 percent the year before, the Oregon Employment Department announced Tuesday.

Oregon’s statewide unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in August, and the national rate was 4.1 percent.

Regional economist Shawn Barrick said Lincoln County’s seasonally adjusted nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 15 in August to 18,300 jobs. Seasonally adjusted figures compare expected changes with actual changes. A gain of 100 jobs was expected for the month, and the county’s total nonfarm employment increased by 90, with a gain of 10 jobs in the private sector and a gain of 80 jobs in total government employment.

Leisure and hospitality lost 40 jobs while local education added 70 jobs, Barrick said.

August’s total nonfarm employment numbers were down 370 jobs – or 1.9 percent — over the year, Barrick said. The largest gain occurred in private education and health services which rose by 120 jobs over the year in August while retail trade lost 160 jobs and local government lost 120 jobs.
