LINCOLN CITY – Lincoln City police shot and killed a man shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday when officers went to a domestic disturbance call at a motel and the suspect reached for guns in his waistband, Oregon State Police said in a news release late Saturday.
State police are taking the lead role in investigating the shooting that occurred at the Motel 6 in Lincoln City.
On Tuesday state police identified the man as Francisco Campos, 36, of Woodburn.
State police said Lincoln City officers responded to report at 12:22 p.m. of a domestic disturbance between the man and a woman and discovered outstanding warrants for the man’s arrest. The man and woman also appeared to be associated with a stolen vehicle in the motel’s parking, police said.
Court records indicate Campos was wanted in Marion County for taking more than $100 worth of goods from the Nike Factory store in Woodburn.
State police said officers contacted the man at 1:04 p.m. but he was “noncompliant.” During the contact, the suspect had two firearms in his waistband which he reached for and was shot by officers, state police said. The man was taken to the hospital where he died.
State police are being helped in the investigation by officers from Newport, Lincoln City, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, the Lincoln County district attorney’s office, and the county’s medical examiner.
It was the second officer-involved shooting death in Lincoln City in the past two months. On Sept. 5, members of a state police SWAT team shot and killed Walter O. Anderson, 38, of Nevada, after a long standoff in a home where he had fled after shooting at Lincoln City police from his converted school bus. Before that, the last police shooting was in April 2020 when officers shot and killed David A. Xanatos, 40, of Idaho after they responded to a trespassing complaint at a Rite Aid store and he approached two officers with a knife.
