June rain mostly fell early in month as central coast begins dry spell

The first week of July is warm and dry – and expected to get hot this weekend — but the month of June was normal for rainfall in the Yachats area while the total for the first six months of 2024 is running ahead of last year.

Don Tucker, who lives two miles north of Yachats and has been keeping records for 18 years said weather in June was typical but “The rainfall for the month and year to date trend is up, as is the trend for the month’s average low and median temperature.”

Most of the rain in June fell on the second day of the month; otherwise it has been dry – and should continue to be so in July, the start of what are typically the three driest months on the coast.

Tucker measured 3.57 inches of rain in June and has 56.53 inches of rain for the first six months of 2024. Last year at this time he had recorded 36.30 inches of rain.

At the city of Yachats’ wastewater treatment plant, city staff measured 3.03 inches in June for a six-month total of 46.50 inches – almost 13 inches more than this time last year.

Adam Altson, who lives near the treatment plant, recorded 2.62 inches of rain in June – 2.26 inches falling June 2 — for a six-month total of 45.29 inches. That’s his highest six-month total in seven years of record keeping and nine inches more than he had in 2023.

Julie Bailey, who lives at the 200-foot elevation level of Radar Road, measured 2.95 inches of rain in June – 2.46 inches occurring June 2 – and has 52.69 for the year. That’s almost 13 inches more than her six-month total for 2023.

More ominously for the coming week, Bailey recorded six days with temperatures greater than 70 degrees including a high of 73.1 degrees on June 30.

As always, it’s a wetter story up the Yachats River valley.

Jim Adler, who lives three miles up the valley, recorded 4.83 inches of rain in June – just below his average for 15 years – and has 69.72 inches so far this year.

Bob Williams, who lives eight miles upriver, recorded 4.18 inches of rain in June and had 83.03 inches for the year – 23 inches more than last year at this time.
