Indivisible Waves of Waldport is sponsoring a five-session civics class at the Newport campus of Oregon Coast Community College beginning in late September and going into December.
Any community members are invited to learn how government works, what your rights are, how elections happen, and how you can make a difference.
Classes are 6-7:30 p.m. Thursdays beginning Sept. 25 through Dec. 11. The cost for the series is $25, but is free to students and scholarships are available. Classes will be held at the college’s main campus in Newport.
The courses are:
- Sept. 25. What If They Come Knocking: Whether it’s law enforcement at your door, an emergency at school, or a situation at work, it helps to know your rights and responsibilities.
- Oct. 9. Government 101: This session breaks down the layers of government — federal, state, county, and city — to help understand how decisions are made and how to make your voice heard.
- Oct. 23: How Elections Work:This session goes beyond ballots and campaigns to explain the full election process, from voter registration to certification.
- Nov. 13: Communication Counts: Messaging matters, especially when it comes to community action and public advocacy. Learn how to speak up, speak out, and speak effectively.
- Dec. 11: Taking Action: Put your passion to work in this hands-on session focused on community organizing and civic engagement.
