Night owls and early morning commuters entering or leaving Newport from the south could face delays beginning this week as a $4.84 million U.S. Highway 101 paving project shifts into gear Sunday nights through Friday mornings.
Crews on the Oregon Department of Transportation project have already begun work on intersections and curbs between Southeast 40th and Southeast 123rd streets.
On Sunday, work shifts into higher gear with possible lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
ODOT says pavement in the 4½-mile section of Highway 101 is in poor condition and needs to be replaced. So crews will grind down and repave the road and install rumble strips and new striping.
ODOT is also asking drivers to pay more attention in the work zone, to slow down, move over and remember that fines for traffic violations double in all Oregon work zones, whether workers and signs are present or not.
How about resurfacing South Beaver Creek Road? This is an alternate road used when an accident occurs on HWY101. One might describe a ride on South Beaver as traveling on a buckboard. The condition of the road is atrocious to say the least. On another note a section of Bayview road had been gravel for more than 3 years. Potholes rarely filled, sunken grade as well as dangerous drops on each side of the road.
It seems this part of Lincoln County is forgotten. Are we?
Erosion has seriously undercut part of Hwy 101 just below the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center. The posts for the guardrails on the west edge of the highway are completely exposed – it’s a disaster waiting to happen. If that section of 101 closes, people will have to drive through the valley to get from Yachats to Florence. Seems like that should be a priority!
