A touring show of high-end art quilts returns to Yachats on Valentine’s Day weekend.
“Sacred Threads” is the title of the exhibit, taking place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 14-15 in the Yachats Commons. Suggested donation is $5.
The show returns courtesy of Polly Plumb Productions, the local non-profit that promotes cultural events in the city.
“We have brought this Valentine’s Day show to Yachats in the past, and it’s been very well received,” said Robert Rubin, a Polly Plumb board member.
This year’s show brings together art quilts centered on “joy, inspiration, spirituality, healing, grief and peace,” according to the Sacred Threads website.
Ruth Bass, a renowned quilter and former Polly Plumb board member, introduced the community to art quilt shows several years ago. Her last local effort was an art quilt tribute to the late Princes Diana in 2023.
“Art quilts take quilting to a new level,” said Rubin. “They move the craft from the kitchen to the art studio, and are meant to be hung on the wall just like other fine art.”
The more advanced works sell for thousands of dollars.
Polly Plumb is planning another art quilt show, “Somebody Told Me … Communicating with Thread,” for March 28-29 at the Commons.
In 2017, Polly Plumb produced an international art quilt challenge “Gems of the Sea” awarding $2,000 in prizes and attracting more than 100 entries from five countries.
Sacred Threads was established to “provide a safe venue for quilters who see their work as a connection to the sacred and/or as an expression of their spiritual journey,” according to the organization’s website. “The objective is to create a dignified exhibition of artwork that touches on both spiritual and personal levels for all who view it.”
