Yachats is working hard to make sure our town is a place where people can afford to live. We’ve teamed up with Cascadia Partners to upgrade our housing and zoning codes. This project isn’t just about following new state laws; it’s about making sure our local rules keep up with what our neighbors need today.

Why we’re doing this

The way we live is changing, and to keep Yachats strong, we need housing options for every stage of life. This update has three main goals:

  • More options for middle-income: Allowing for flexibility in duplexes and cottage clusters that are more affordable for families and local employees.
  • Helping seniors stay in Yachats: By allowing Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), which are currently not permitted under our code, longtime residents can remain in the community they love, even as their needs change. This also allows for more affordable housing in the community.
  • A community for all: Upgrading our code to ensure Yachats remains inclusive for the people who live and work in and around our city.

Keeping our character is important; what we’re looking at is what’s called “gentle density.” The idea is to allow more flexible use of property without losing the feel of our neighborhoods. We’re auditing our current codes to make them clearer and to ensure they align with Oregon’s latest housing requirements.
