More than 300 wreaths will be placed on the graves of veterans in Eureka Cemetery in Newport on Saturday as part of the National Wreaths Across America Day. The wreath-laying ceremony begins at 10 a.m. at the cemetery, 1101 N.E. Yaquina Heights Drive.
“All residents, visitors and guests are invited to attend and participate in the annual program to remember our local military veterans who have
passed away, by placing a wreath on their gravesite and speaking their name aloud so they are not forgotten,” said Larry Osborne, an Oregon Coast Veterans Association volunteer and event coordinator.
The ceremony will have the Newport Girl Scout troop leading the Pledge of Allegiance and will close with retired Navy Chief Steven Schaljo playing “Taps”. The guest speaker is Oregon Army National Guard Sgt. Luke Bobeda of Newport.
“This year we will place nearly 300 wreaths to remember our passed veterans, honor our current military men and women and their families, and to teach younger generations of the importance of our freedom and those who help preserve it”, said Osborne.
