The U.S. Coast Guard announced it has awarded a $9.4 million contract to Bristol Design Build Services of Anchorage, Alaska for major maintenance and repairs to 16 single-family homes at Station Yaquina Bay in Newport.
The project will completely renovate the 1970s-era structures, including replacing roofs, siding, and piping.
The work is expected to be completed in two phases to reduce impacts on Coast Guard members and families. Eight homes will undergo restoration and be unavailable during the first phase of construction. The other eight homes at Station Yaquina Bay will undergo renovation during the project’s second phase.
“Our crews at Station Yaquina Bay carry out high-stakes, life-saving missions in some of the most challenging maritime environments in the country,” Rear Adm. Mike Campbell, Commander, Coast Guard Northwest District said in a news release announcing the project. “Ensuring our service members and their families have modern, safe, and resilient housing is vital to our operational readiness.
The Coast Guard said the contract is funded by the fiscal year 2025 budget reconciliation and part of a strategy to invest in Coast Guard facilities and infrastructure.

Not to begrudge the watchers, but dang, $587k per makes for one heck of a remodel budget.
It’s about time – long overdue. I praise the people who got behind this project to make it happen. The responsibilities of our Coast Guard members is often taken for granted by the general public and for the government to provide sub-par housing to them is embarrassing. Actually shameful considering the expense allocated to build government office buildings which are actually lavish.
Absolutely think our Coast Guard families deserve housing in great and modern condition, but as another commenter pointed out, $587,000 per house? I think of what I could do with a $587,000 renovation budget for my 1970’s home … like tear it down and start over.
