YACHATS – Two Lane County residents are in the Lincoln County jail after their arrest for a series of car clouts and a car theft at the Overleaf Lodge and Fireside Motel in Yachats in August and September.
Abby M. Brooks, 24, of Eugene and McKenzie D. Harris, 30, of Springfield were arraigned Monday on 13 criminal charges ranging from aggravated theft to unauthorized use of a motor vehicle to criminal mischief.
Harris, who has a criminal record dating back to 2013 in Lane County for identity theft, forgery and methamphetamine possession, is being held on $250,000 bail. Brooks is being held on $200,000 bail.
Despite failing to appear in court three times on charges dating back to 2020, a pre-trial report recommended release for Brooks because she has family support in Eugene. The pre-trial report for Harris recommended against release because of 19 arrest cycles and 13 incidents of failing to appear in court.
Preliminary hearings for both are Monday.
The two were arrested Sunday in Coburg by Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Zach Akin who was investigating car clouts and a car theft Aug. 7, Sept. 3 and Sept. 9 at the two Yachats motels.
In Akin’s probable cause affidavit and in charging documents filed in Lincoln County circuit court, Harris and Brooks are accused of stealing two Rolex watches and other items from a 2020 BMW X6 on Aug. 7 and then returning later that night to steal the car. Brooks said another man, who was not identified, participated in the Aug. 7 car theft. Akin said the value of the car and lost items was $143,000.
Brooks is accused of returning to the motels Sept. 3 and breaking into three cars and stealing items worth $1,200, according to Akin’s affidavit. Both are accused of returning to the motels’ parking lots Sept. 9 to break into three more cars, according to the court documents.
According to Akin’s affidavit, the Harris and Brooks were identified from security cameras at the motels.
