Summer starts sizzling this Memorial Day weekend in Yachats with a roster of special events and local traditions — an art show, a handcrafts and baked goods bazaar, an all-you-can eat pancake breakfast, a big book sale and a farmer’s market.
Saturday and Sunday, May 25-May 26
Yachats Arts Guild “Spring Into Art!” show, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Yachats Commons; Free admission.
Some 18 area artists, including glass master Chuck Franklin of Waldport and intarsia woodworker Janette Square of Yachats, will be featured in the Guild’s spring showcase. With prices starting at $18, artworks on sale will include jewelry, paintings and drawings, sculpture, photography and more.
Franklin, a noted practitioner who has retired from commercial installations, takes orders for private commissions only. Square fashions popular intarsia wood creations based on nature and fantasy.
“We have several new artists in the show, so it’s a great chance to see some beautiful works and support local artists,” said show coordinator Sherry Secreast.
The show is produced by Polly Plumb Productions, a local non-profit that brings cultural events to Yachats.
Yachats Ladies Club Memorial Day Bazaar, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., 286 W. Third Street at Pontiac; Free admission.
Shoppers can browse a wide array of handcrafted items, from quilts and throws to aprons and homemade soaps, plus baked goods, mini-pies, tea and coffee.
“We appreciate the public’s support so we can offer support to those who need it,” said club president Huck Huckins. Proceeds from this and the club’s other bazaars throughout the year, benefit non-profits in the area, including Yachats Youth and Family Activities Program, food banks in Waldport and Yachats, and the Friends of Lincoln County Animal Shelter.
Visitors to the bazaar can also buy $1 quilt raffle tickets for the club’s scholarship fund for Oregon Coast Community College. The winner does not need to be present when the raffle drawing takes place in December at the club’s Christmas Bazaar.

Yachats Lions Club Pancake Breakfast, 7:30-11 a.m., Lions Hall, 344 W. Fourth St. Suggested donation: $10.
A fundraising club tradition for more than 20 years, the popular event offers all-you-can-eat pancakes, eggs, sausage and ham, plus juice, coffee, tea and milk.
“Angell Job Corps always provides students to help us serve, along with our club volunteers,” said breakfast coordinator/club president David OKelley. “It’s really a gathering for fellowship and supporting a great cause.”
Proceeds benefit college scholarships for graduating seniors at Waldport High School and other donations to local organizations.
Friends of Yachats Library Book Sale, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Commons basement; Free admission.
This year, the sale features a new “bargain wall” offering ex-library books at just $1 apiece. In addition, the Memorial Day sale offers over 6,000 gently used books, ranging from mysteries to biography, plus $5 puzzles, special books at $10 and up, and $1 children’s books.
Shoppers are urged to bring their own bags (cloth bags are no longer for sale). Cash is appreciated; cards are welcome.
The library building is closed in preparation for demolition, and construction of a new facility. The library resumes operation on a much smaller scale Tuesday, June 4 in Room 8 of the Commons, from noon to 3 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.
Yachats Farmers Market, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., West Fourth St.
The weekly open-air market continues, operating each Sunday through mid-October. Farmers are joined by potters, jewelry-makers and more handcrafters. Shoppers will find organic vegetables, herbs, jams, plants and clothing.
