Even though rainfall for the year is running quite a bit above average, central Oregon coast weather in April was pretty unremarkable. Even YachatsNews’ weather watchers described it as “ho hum.”
Maybe that’s a good thing for spring.
“We did have a stretch of very nice weather in the middle of the month,” said weather watcher Adam Altson of Yachats. “It was a fake start to the nicer weather we’ll be seeing soon.”
Altson, who lives on Ocean View Drive in Yachats, measured 4.48 inches of rain in April for a four-month total of 38.25 inches. While his April total was slightly lower than normal for the month, his yearly total is still his highest in seven years because of the very wet January, February and March.
At the nearby Yachats wastewater treatment plant, city crews measured 4.58 inches of rain in April for a year-to-date total of 39.31 inches.
Julie Bailey, who lives at the 200 foot elevation of Radar Road, recorded 5.64 inches of rain in April for year-to-date total of 44.63 inches.
Two miles north of town, weather watcher Don Tucker recorded 5.42 inches of rain in April and 47.86 inches for the year. His average for April over 18 years of record keeping is 6.24 inches – and his four-month total is running 40 percent of average.
As always, it was much wetter up the Yachats River valley.
Jim Adler, who lives three miles east of Yachats, recorded 7.30 inches of rain in April – an inch less than his 15-year average. For the year, however, Adler’s total is 51.16 inches.
Bob Williams, who leaves eight miles east of Yachats, measured 7.18 inches of rain in April for a four-month total of a whopping 73.08 inches.
I do wish you would publish the “rainfall year” totals. The rainfall year, which runs from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30 is what is used by meteorologists. I live off of Starr Creek Drive and I’ve had over 90 inhes of rain since Oct. 1. I live on 1.01 acres, so the water dumped on our property is 2.5 million gallons.
