TOLEDO — Oregon Coast Community College will soon start offering classes in Toledo due to a new partnership with the Lincoln County School District.

The boards of both institutions agreed on a partnership Tuesday during their annual joint meeting, allowing the college to use the former Arcadia building in Toledo. The building would be used as the college’s East County Center to hold a variety of programs.

This spring, the college’s Small Business Development Center will deliver workshops on entrepreneurship and marketing, while the college’s community education program will deliver workshops on topics ranging from planning for end-of-life to playing Mah Jongg.

The college also hopes to offer adult basic education like GED courses and English for speakers of other languages in the fall, according to an announcement Wednesday.

“In my first full year as president, I’ve been asked repeatedly how the college plans to expand its presence in East County,” said Marshall Mease Roache. “This collaboration with the Lincoln County School District reflects our shared commitment to educational access and community development.”

The college’s main campus is in Newport, with a large satellite campus in Lincoln City and a one-building campus in Waldport. Oregon Coast CC has offered welding instruction at the Port of Toledo since 2020, but the availability of the Arcadia site will allow the college to broaden its offerings in east Lincoln County.

Arcadia School includes original buildings constructed around 1963, with a main building added in 1978. The site has not been a full-time school since 2006 but has been used for after-school programs, has temporarily housed students during school construction and served as a home to several school district departments.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the facility was adapted to support distance learning and continues to house records, special education resources, and other school district operations such as food services.

“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to maximizing existing public resources,” Superintendent Majalise Tolan said in a statement. “By putting the Arcadia building back into service for educational purposes, we’re supporting local students and communities without asking taxpayers to fund new construction.”

East County residents who may be interested in leading community education workshops in the Toledo facility can reach out to the college via email at [email protected] or by calling 541-994-4166.
