DEPOE BAY – A charter boat used for whale watching excursions sank overnight Monday while tied off at the dock in Depoe Bay harbor.
The Starship, a 34-foot “six-pack” charter boat was reported to have sunk at approximately 2:50 a.m. Monday. Depoe Bay harbor master David Martin along with the city’s public works department set out booms early Monday morning that successfully soaked up fuel and oil that leaked from the vessel.
The boat’s owner is only listed as “Captain Andrew” on public websites. Prior to this past year, he worked with Dockside Charters and Whale Watching Tours.
The boat sank on the southside of dock No. 2 and although completely submerged, remains visible from the surface, Martin said. The owner, whose name the city did not divulge, is awaiting a salvage crew to retrieve the boat. There was no damage done to the dock.
Depoe Bay harbor, about six acres in size, is the smallest navigable harbor in the United States. Its entrance is about 50-feet wide and 100-feet long.
