NEWPORT – Portions of Big Creek Road washed away during last week’s rainstorm, prompting the city of Newport to close the road that leads to its water reservoir to close indefinitely.
Cracked and crumbling, portions of northeast Big Creek Road that border the guardrails are no longer there exposing the layers of soil underneath. The road is closed indefinitely to vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians, the city said Saturday.
“The city of Newport officials will work to identify the necessary repairs to the road before establishing a timeline to reopen,” a city spokesperson told the Lincoln Chronicle on Saturday.
The city said it would provide updates on social media as more information becomes available.
Big Creek Park, Big Creek bridge, and Big Creek Road south of northeast Harney Street remain open.
