Get down and dirty and support community, nonprofit KYAQ radio when San Francisco-based Dirty Cello rocks Newport’s Pacific Maritime Heritage Center on Sunday, Aug. 31
The band has performed all over the world, including on a whale watching-boat off the coast of Iceland, a commune in Israel’s Negev Desert, a castle in the Scottish Highlands, a California nudist camp and a warehouse in China.
Roughly 14 years ago, classically trained cellist Rebecca Roudman grew tired of playing the classics in professional orchestras, went rogue and formed Dirty Cello.
Starting as a cello and guitar duo playing blues and rock, their sound caught on and the band expanded to include a bass and keyboard. Their repertoire grew to include Americana, bluegrass, originals and everything in between. The band’s music was described by Oakland Magazine as “All over the map: funky, carnival, romantic, sexy, tangled, electric, fiercely rhythmic and textured and only occasionally classical.”
“We are fun, we are high energy and we primarily play blues and rock, Americana and bluegrass,” Roudman said. “When you come to our concert, we’re not like a normal band that has a predetermined set list with a bunch of songs, and this one comes after that. We have about 60 to 70 songs memorized, and we just kind of pick them on the spot, depending on what the audience is digging. So, let’s say they’re liking blues more than rock. Well, we’re going to play more blues for them. In a lot of ways, the audience determines what we’re going to play.”
Sunday’s show begins at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Heritage Center, 333 S.E. Bay Blvd. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. For more information and tickets, go to www.KYAQ.org.
