Registration has opened for the 26th annual Newport Marathon and Half Marathon on June 1.
The course is certified by USA Track & Field, making it an official qualifier for the Boston Marathon and has a reputation for producing exceptional finishing times, organizers said in a news release.
The marathon and half-marathon start in Yaquina Bay State Park, head north into the Bayfront before circling back and heading east on Yaquina Bay Road with the half-marathon runners turning around at the 8.7 mile mark and the marathoners turning around at 15.2 miles and heading back to Newport.
“For nearly a quarter century, the Newport Marathon has combined competitive racing with coastal beauty to create an unforgettable experience for runners of all levels,” race director Tom Swinford said in a news release. “Our course consistently ranks among the fastest in the Pacific Northwest, making it ideal for those chasing Boston qualifying times while supporting an important community cause.”
The Newport Marathon is a non-profit with all race proceeds helping funding Lincoln County School District athletic programs. Last year’s event raised over $100,000 for equipment, facilities, and participation opportunities for students.
There are three events. People walking the marathon route begin at 6 a.m., the full marathon runners starting at 7 a.m. and the half-marathon runners at 8 a.m. The route features aid stations, professional timing, and a festive finish line celebration at the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club. Participants receive custom finisher medals, technical shirts, and post-race refreshments.
