Five beach cleanup efforts will take place Saturday, April 19 across five sites around the Newport area in honor of Earth Day.

Registration is open for the annual event, hosted by the Newport Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation in partnership with Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism.

The cleanups will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19. Each location will be led by a beach captain and will have bags and gloves supplied for volunteers.

Volunteers can also register the day of the cleanup at the check-in tables.

The Surfrider Foundation seeks to protect the enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches for all people, according to its website. SOLVE is an environmental nonprofit started as a grassroots effort and now mobilizes and trains volunteers across Oregon and southwest Washington to clean and restore neighborhoods and natural areas.

North Lincoln Sanitary Service and Thompson’s Sanitary Service are donating their waste hauling services for the event.

  1. While I’m glad they do this, I wish they’d do cleanups along US 101 as well. I see far more litter on the highway shoulders then I do on the beach, and I walk on the beach fairly often.

I’ve seen county inmates cleaning the highway on several occasions, and I’m not sure of ODOT’s responsibility. But living within a few blocks of the Coast Highway, I can tell you it could use more frequent litter pickups.

    • Hi Lee, great point about the highways. We actually just did a highway 101 cleanup at our adopt a highway mile in the Moolack beach area! We try to do that about 3-4 times a year and could use all the help we can get because, like you said, there’s a ton of trash along the highway, which eventually makes its way to the beach anyway. Thanks for your support!
