Waldport council OKs vacating short section of street for new campground

WALDPORT – The Waldport city council has approved vacating a portion of Northwest John Way for a Corvallis-based developer who wants to build a “glamping” campground and mini putting golf course.

Map shows the portion of Northwest John Street that the Waldport city council has approved to be vacated.

Amy Jamros of Livesay Development Group petitioned the council during a public hearing Nov. 14. The decision allows Livesay to close a short section of the street which divides its two tax lots adjacent to Alsea Bay in downtown Waldport.

In petitioning the city, Jamros highlighted that the road runs through the center of the planned resort in a way that’s not cohesive and does not allow the land to be used to its full potential.

The Waldport Planning Commission meeting Monday, Nov. 25 is the next and final step in getting development plans approved.

The three-acre development would unify two vacant lots wedged between Alsea Bay and Northwest Cedar and Northwest Spring streets where Waldport Middle School once sat. The land has sat vacant for 17 years.

Livesay’s proposal calls for a campground of geodesic domes connected by a raised boardwalk, two open-air pavilions, a pole-barn camp store, playground, food trucks and an 18-hole “Bonsai” golf course.

Two public access points to the bayfront beach will not be hindered by the development.

If Livesay is successful in securing permits, they plan to break ground this winter and open in early summer. The golf course would be shaped in the winter and left to settle until artificial turf is installed in spring.

  1. I say about time that some people are willing to make something else to do in waldport . Now let’s see what happens if the city council will let it pass . I am all for it. So thanks to the owner of the property of this great idea. I hope that this works out for you and our community

  2. Of course they did. Not sure many people understand what glamping is all about. Again, when can we get affordable apartments or homes for current residents?
