That whooshing sound is summer speeding by, but it won’t depart without a big weekend of Labor Day activities in Yachats. From Saturday through Labor Day Monday the city offers a packed schedule of crafts, food, art, books and music.
Saturday and Sunday
Yachats Ladies Club Labor Day Bazaar: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., 286 W. Third St.
Homemade baked goods — including a variety of mini pies — join tables of handcrafted items, from knitted scarves, hats, sweaters and blankets to pet goods, jewelry, homemade soaps and more. Raffle tickets will be on sale for $1, benefiting the club’s scholarship fund for students in nursing and education at Oregon Coast Community College, as well as local service organizations. The prize is a handcrafted quilt, with a drawing at the club’s December holiday bazaar.
Yachats Arts Guild Labor Day Show: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Yachats Commons multipurpose room. “Artists Unite!” is the theme of the traditional art exhibit and sale, featuring works from coastal artists in oil, acrylic and watercolor, along with jewelry, photography and mixed media collages. Admission is free.
Saturday
Classical piano concert: 6:30-7:30 p.m., Yachats Community Presbyterian Church, 360 W. Seventh St. Award-winning pianist Andrei Andreev will perform selections by Ludwig van Beethoven, including beloved piano sonatas Moonlight, Pathetique, Tempest and others.
Sunday
Yachats Lions Club Labor Day Pancake Breakfast: 7:30-11:00 a.m., Lions Hall, 344 W. Fourth St. A fundraising tradition for the service group, this all-you-can-eat breakfast includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, ham, milk, orange juice and coffee. Suggested donation is $10. Club volunteers will be serving up the ample fare, aided by students from nearby Angell Job Corps. This year, proceeds will benefit the Lions Club’s support of scholarships at Waldport High School.
Friends of Yachats Library Book Sale: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., basement of the Yachats Commons. “Time to start Christmas shopping” is the theme of the final sale of 2024 by the library support/fundraising group. Shoppers can choose from over 2,000 fiction and 3,500 non-fiction titles for $2, with over 600 former library books at just $1. Puzzles will be offered at $5, children’s books at $1, and more than 250 paperback books at $1.
Yachats Farmers Market: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. along West Fourth Street on south edge of Yachats Commons. The weekly, open-air market features local produce, herbs and jams, plus handcrafted items such as pottery, jewelry and clothing. Friendly, leashed dogs are welcome.
Monday
Pacific Coast Wind Ensemble Concert: 2-4 p.m., Yachats Commons Pavilion. The third annual, free Labor Day performance by this community concert band will offer an “Old-time band concert”, patterned after those of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The theme will be carried out with Sousa marches, ragtime dances, Irving Berlin favorites, patriotic anthems and lively novelty numbers. Seating will be available both inside and outside the Pavilion and attendees may also bring their own lawn chairs. Admission is free; donations welcomed. Featuring more than 30 musicians, the band draws members from Florence to Tillamook to Eugene.
