Rainfall in May was slightly above average in the Yachats area – but the first days of June saw a doozy of a rainstorm.
The Sunday storm dropped 2.26 inches of rain in downtown Yachats, according to YachatsNews’ weather watchers, and nearly 4 inches farther east in the Yachats River valley.
“Anybody got a snorkel?” asked Jim Adler, who lives three miles east of Yachats and recorded 3.96 inches of rain Sunday.
Adler, who has been recording rainfall for 15 years, is already just one inch short of his average for June after the weekend storm.
In town, Adam Altson measured 2.26 inches of rainfall Sunday at his house on Ocean View Drive. The city of Yachats water treatment plant’s staff measured 2.62 inches of rain during the storm.
But rainfall in May was fairly typical for the month, the weather watchers said.
Altson recorded 4.42 inches for the month – including nearly 2.5 inches May 3-4 — giving him 42.67 inches of rain for 2024.
“Our May rainfall seems to fluctuate wildly, but the 4.42 inches seems to fall near or slightly above the average,” Altson said. “The annual rainfall total so far is still my highest total through May, thanks to heavy rain earlier in the year.”
The gauge at the wastewater treatment plant recorded 4.16 inches of rain in May and now has 43.47 inches for the year.
Julie Bailey, who lives on Radar Road east of downtown, measured 5.11 inches of rain in May – more than double last year’s amount – and has 49.74 inches for the year.
Don Tucker, who lives two miles north of Yachats, had what he called a typical May – 5.10 inches of rain – for a year-to-date total of 52.96 inches.
As always, the rainfall in the Yachats River Valley is higher. Adler recorded 6.29 inches of rain in May – 1.31 inches above his average for the month – and had 64.89 inches for the year.
Bob Williams, who lives eight miles up Yachats River Road, measured 5.77 inches in May and has 78.85 inches for the year.
