After more than two years of holding one night meeting a month, the Yachats City Council has decided it wants to meet strictly in daylight.
The council voted 3-2 Wednesday to change the meeting time of its second meeting of the month from 6 p.m. to 2 p.m. Councilors James Kerti and Leslie Vaaler voted against the change.
The council moved to one night meeting a month in an effort to make it easier for people who worked during the day to attend meetings. The first meeting of the month is at 9:30 a.m. the first Wednesday of the month, the second was at 6 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month.
Mayor John Moore proposed the change back to an afternoon meeting, saying that it will get dark by 6 p.m. in October, that he saw no difference in attendance at night meetings, and moving to the afternoon would save overtime for some employees.
“If it’s an issue that interests people, they turn out,” Moore said.
Kerti said that many people who may want to attend meetings may not have day jobs but are volunteers or have other commitments to keep them from attending a daytime council session.
Moore, Max Glenn and Jim Tooke voted to return to the 2 p.m. time for the second council session of the month, the first of which will be Oct. 16.
